After a four year hiatus from the Detroit Motor Show, online speculation is rife that Porsche will wow its US audience with a race-ready coupe version of the 918 Spyder Concept.
A number of sources have now stated that the track-only coupe is likely to tip the scales just shy of 1500kg and will be powered by a 373kW 3.4-litre V8 petrol engine (borrowed from Porsche's RS Spyder race cars) coupled to 162kW of electric propulsion. If the tales are true, the hard top model could be the next piece of the puzzle in the marque's hybrid racing strategy.
The news comes as Porsche continues to ready its 918 Spyder for general production, the car built after an unprecedented response to a concept first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in (March) 2010. Originally code-named XG10, the 918 Spyder's underpinnings were always designed to support multiple variants, lending credence to the hardtop buzz.
Porsche will take the wraps off its latest concept bright and early on Monday morning with a press conference scheduled for 6:30am US time.
